Paper Abstract / Summary:

The purpose of this action research was to desing the most appropriate intervention plan to reduce the high drop out rate of second year students of Gingoog City Comprehensive National High School ( GCCNHS ), Gingoog City , Philippines for School year 2011-2012 ).

This study was challenged by the DepEd Dropout Reduction Program (DORP) which offers alternative delivery program that aim to keep students in school and finish their basic education and the challenge of Project REACH which states " Find them, Keep them and Make them complete school". Project REACH through DORP implementation successfully reaching 3.4 million of youth aged 12 to 15 years ols ( DepEd Order no. 74 Series 2010 ).

This study was limited only to the profile of the sixty nine ( 69 ) second year students using  eleven sections (excluding the cream sections because there were no drop out in such sections) in random sampling who were enrolled for school year 2011-2012   at GCCNHS, Gingoog City  causes of drop-out and the intervention plan. Of sixty respondents fifty six were males and only thirteen were females. The research instrument used was from the DepEd form of the Causes of Drop out in School ( 2011 ).The data gathered were treated using frequency and percentage.

Findings revealed that males were prone to dropout than females as confirmed by Enstwisle & Oslon (2001) as cited by Martin et al ( 2007), Blafanz ( 2006 ) as cited by Kenelly and Monrad (2007 ) . The specific months as the risk months for drop out rates were mostly to occur from august, September and October because these months where sport events begin and ended. After such events for one and two weeks, these students who most love sports found no interest in going to school. The critical month  for dropping out was December because of the long vacation. Other causes of drop out as revealed from personal interview of the respondents were: no parents' support, teacher's attitude towards students, subject dislike, teacher's treatment to students particularly the labelling, and the unfriendly classrooms.

It is concluded that the causes of drop out among second year learners are: family problem, school related problem, individual related problem, environmental, geographical and financial problems. The intervention plan for the said study would be :  Dissemination od Action Research finding, Opening of Open High School Program, Appointing Year Level Coordinator, Parents' Involvement, Check and Connect, Classroom Guidance Counselling Program, Values Formation Seminar and Home Visitation.
