The academic curriculum has never been all that schools offer to their students. Often a range of other classes, clubs and activities is available to students, sometimes in lessons but more often at games time, in the lunch break or after school. These are referred to as the co-curriculum, and they are mostly voluntary for students. Such activities have less status in education than the main curriculum. However, they are often held to be very important to the wider education of young men and women. The academic achievement in different subject like science, mathematics, literature and social sciences are directly related to their mental development and understanding level, which is possible by their all round development of students for which different level of participation in co-curricular activities also responsible. So the objective of study is to analyze the effect of participation level of students in co-curricular activities and their academic achievements in different subjects and if they have any correlation then to extent that is effective.
This study was designed to investigate the effect of level of participation in various co-curricular activities on academic achievement of students in Allahabad district. Emphasis was put on trying to establish the relationship between the academic achievement of student in different subjects like science, mathematics, language and social science with co-curricular activities. For data collection, a check list was prepared by researcher under the supervision of her guide. The study employed the use of mean, standard deviation and correlation coefficient to establish the nature of the relationships. The significance of results were established and data was collected from 100 students (70 girls and 30 boys), respondents selected from the three CBSE board schools of Allahabad district ( Bal Bharti Public School, Swami Vivekananda School, Girls High School).) Using the simple random sampling method. To analyze the data, the Pearson product moment correlation statistical tool was used with the aim of establishing the relationship between student’s achievements in four subjects with co-curricular activities and significance of each result were tested.
The findings revealed the existence of a significant relationship between student’s achievement in different subjects as well as total with various co-curricular activities. The result shows the significant difference between the academic achievement of boys and girls in various subjects as well as significant difference between the levels of participation in different co-curricular activities in boys and girls were also found. Study also revealed that there is low correlation between the academic achievement in science subject and language and level of participation in co-curricular activities of students and significant correlation between the academic achievement in mathematics and social sciences and level of participation in co-curricular activities of students. There is significant relationship between the aggregate academic achievement and level of participation in co-curricular activities of students. There is not significant difference between the correlation coefficient of boys and girls in academic achievement in science subjects and language and level of participation in co-curricular activities. There is significant difference between the correlation coefficient of boys and girls in academic achievement in mathematics and social sciences and level of co-curricular activities. There is significant difference between the correlation coefficient of boys and girls in aggregate academic achievement and level of co-curricular activities.
On the basis of the findings, the researcher made the following conclusions; girls take more interest to participate in co-curricular activities than boys and also they have high achievements in various subjects than boys.
On the basis of the conclusions made, the researcher recommended that boys should also promote to participate in co-curricular activities. The schools should improve the number of co-curricular activities so the student can take part in maximums as par their interest as well as their streams also.
