Thesis Abstract / Summary:

Santan (Ixora coccinea, Linn., Dwarf Red var.,) is one of the common ornamental shrub plant found in the Philippines and in the west coast of India. The test substance used is the methanol extract (ME) of leaves in Ixora coccinea, Linn (IC) and were tested in the Escherichia coli (EC) at the different concentrations (250,000, 500,000 and 750,000 ppm). Tested organism does not cause antibacterial effect. The IC leaf in ME (250,000 ppm = 0 mm), (500,000 ppm = 0 mm) and (750,000 ppm = 0 mm) does not show antibacterial activity within 24 hours. It is concluded that there methanolic extract of leaf IC possess no antibacterial activity and it those not support the folkloric use of IC in the country of India. However, the null hypothesis is accepted.
