In recent years, the Internet has become faster and more reliable. Internet access flourished all around the world including in most homes of middle class families and in almost all work environments. People are spending more and more time in front of their computers connected to the Internet for various reasons. This reality had two different consequences.
First of all, people started socializing less using traditional manners and more using electronic technologies like internet video communications. Also, this advent brought about a diverse form of entertainment, computer gaming. These two consequences combined together gave rise to what is known as ‘Multi-
Player Online Gaming’ whereby people socialize with other people by playing games with or against each other from behind their own computer. Nowadays, online gaming functionality is embedded with most of the games being produced by the big software companies. Challenger is a new concept in multi-player online gaming where users can play different games through one single system.
In Challenger, game developers upload their multi-player games to the system. The games automatically become playable over the system. Game developers do not need to implement any networking capabilities, just a simple interface. Challenger takes care of all the rest. Players log in with the system and challenge other online players at the available games, and Challenger takes care of game coordination. Moreover, developers can build artificial intelligence modules which they can plug into Challenger games.
This project describes how the Challenger concept was developed into a working online system and the results obtained.
