Paper Abstract / Summary:

Medicinal plants are the great natural resources but due to lack of knowledge, arbitrary use and lack of conservation measures many important medicinal plant species are becoming extinct, endangered and threatened. The present study attempted to develop in vitro micropropagation protocol for two important medicinal plants of Bangladesh Achyranthes aspera and Achyranthes bidentata. Shoot tip and nodal segment of healthy plants from natural condition were used as explant for direct organogenesis. Varying concentrations of auxins and cytokinins both alone and in combination were used. For A. aspera, shoot tip produced the best shoot multiplication (12.2 shoot/explant) in hormonal combination of 2.0 mgl-1 BAP + 0.5 mgl-1 NAA while nodal segment and single cytokinin media showed poor response. But for A. bidentata, nodal segment explant produced best response in single cytokinin media (5.0 mgl-1 of BAP) in terms of maximum number of shoots (10.5). For root induction and root development, IBA in full strength MS media was proved better. However, A. bidentata produced better rooting response than A. aspera. Acclimatization of these in vitro grown plantlets in natural soils was also promising which was 70% for A. aspera and 80 % for A. bidentata, respectively.
