Background and objectives
Disposable infusion pumps, more specifically, elastomeric pumps have gained acceptance and popularity and are being used for an increasing number of cancer patients receiving ambulatory intravenous (IV) chemotherapy in hospital settings. There is also growing evidence that the use of elastomeric pumps is gradually making its way into community settings. The purpose of this project is to carry out a national survey on the use of elastomeric pumps in cancer patients with the aim of finding the most common disease states and drug regimens for which these pumps are used.
Methods
A national survey was carried out by sending electronic survey questionnaires to pharmacists registered on the British Oncology Pharmacy Association (BOPA) database.
Results
The results of the survey have showed that 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) 48 hours infusion in Modified De Gramont for colorectal cancer is the most common drug regimen administered via elastomeric pumps. With varying infusion times, 5-FU was the most common chemotherapy agent used both a as a single agent chemotherapy regimen and in combination chemotherapy regimens. The disease states for which elastomeric pumps were used included head and neck, breast, anal, pancreatic, oesophageal and gastric cancers, along with soft tissue and bone sarcoma and multiple myeloma.
Conclusion
Various types of elastomeric pumps, meeting the different needs of the cancer patient, are being used both in hospital and community settings despite the potential complications associated with their use. New therapies in chemotherapy are constantly emerging and efforts to design and investigate safe and effective chemotherapy regimens with the view of achieving a high response and cure rate are underway.
