Thesis Abstract / Summary:

The use of holy water dates back to the early Christian era, but prior to the 5th century, there is no specific documentation. One of the earliest liturgical documents by a 4th century Bishop refers to the blessing of holy water, invoking his name upon it, and granting that it may have the powers to heal diseases. It was also an old experiences in Ethiopia, in particular Tigray, “holly water” had given success and revealed secrete of the past, present and future of using groundwater for preventing and healing of different infectious diseases.

The main objective of this research is to investigate the geo-medicinal value of groundwater and thereby evaluate the healing power of holy waters in the Geba basin and the surrounding areas through geological, hydrogeolocial and hydrogeochemical analysis.

The investigation started with collection of secondary data from pertinent governmental and non-governmental institutions followed by inventory and sampling of holy water sites. Water samples were analyzed for their chemical, biological and physical properties both at Mekelle University and the Ethiopian water works and design Enterprise Central Laboratory in Addis Ababa. Questionnaires were also prepared and interviews made to relevant individuals. Finally a database of all information was created and several maps were prepared using GIS and remote sensing techniques.

The out put of the research is two classical location maps from interview and data base organization that pin pointing infectious diseases with the intention of healing through this modelled holy water. Furthermore, these two maps are qualitatively overplayed for evaluation of groundwater as an alternative geo-medicine and recount them together.

The research confirms, the holy waters can really cures a number of diseases namely, Endayohanes Adigrat, with the geology of Enticho sand stone and the ions Na+ and HCO3- can nurse back to health stomach problem and Kidney stone. In this order Kidanemihret Mekelle; resting on the geology of shale limestone intercalation with dolerite intrusions to give Mg+2 and SO4-2 ions, which are responsible to cure Asthma and Depression. Similarly, Endagebriel Mekelle having the same geology with that of Kidanemihret, as well is effective for the healing of Osteoporosis. Mg+2 and HCO3- are responsible for the healing of such diseases.
