Thesis Abstract / Summary:

General Industrial and Commercial Waste (GICW) constitutes a significant proportion of the total waste arisings in the UK. However, the knowledge base about this waste stream is still limited. In particular, little is known about the nature of relationships existing between GICW arisings and specific characteristics of the waste producing companies.

Theory indicates that it is possible to identify links between waste generation and company characteristics. Consequently, it sould be possible to construct a predictive GICW generation model, based on measurable company characteristics that are inicators fo GICW generation. The main constraint to the development of such prognostic mechanism is the lack of empirical research.

The study provides an empirical examination of links between waste arisings and variables that could be be used as potential GICW generation indicators.

The study utilised data on GICW arisings collected from a survey of companies in Northern Ireland in a multiple regression model expressing GICW generation as a function of a company's turnover, workforce and expenditure on waste management. The study concludes that all these company characteristic have a significant relationship with GICW. Turnover was found to be a potential indicator of industrial waste generation, while commercial waste arisings appear to be linked to the number of employees in a company.
