The mathematics plays an important role in the curricula of the basic school. It provides instruments to solve a number of problem situations for the students that they will find in their environment. This aspect is very important if we take in account that the current society develops more technological, steadily, and requires high levels of knowledge in the area of mathematics insistently. But, unfortunately, the mathematic subject within the school curricula is the area in which lots of students present major difficulties.
These difficulties were observed by teachers who, despite of their daily effort, found out that for the majority of pupils the use of mathematical operations consist in applying series of rules and routines of mathematical algorithms. One of the subject matters in which the students have major difficulties is related to the concepts of fractions. With relation to the above mentioned justification our research is about a rigorous work settled in the scientific area of developmental psychology and mathematical education. The principal purpose of this research explores the ways of the first formal approach of the pupils towards the topic of fractions underlying text books and based on the interaction between teacher and students. In this context we arise two empirical studies that require the construction and use of a system to analyze descriptive categories.
One of our results determines clearly a distance between the educative practice and the derivative theoretical approach related with the learning and teaching of fractions.
