Study conducted on influence of sewage network on Ground water quality around Challaghata valley of Bangalore City, India. The ground water is believed to be comparatively clean free from pollution than the surface water but prolonged discharge of domestic sewage and solid waste causes ground water to become polluted and create health problem. Present study deals with the status of drinking water quality of Bangalore city, thirty five samples were selected from the Challaghata valley basin area mainly the ground waters from the bore wells and open wells and also the surface water like sewage and lake water samples was collected from the areas. The various parameters such as temperature, pH, electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids turbidity, alkalinity, total hardness , calcium hardness, magnesium hardness, chloride, sulphate, phosphate, nitrate, fluoride, sodium, potassium, Do, BOD, and COD were monitored and compared with different standard parameters.
The analysis of open well reveals that the parameter pH ranges from 7.37mg/l (OW7) to 7.475(OW7) which is slightly alkaline TDS varies from 285.2mg/l(OW3) to 582 mg/l (OW20) and Nitrates ranges from 8mg/l (OW3) to 80mg/l(OW7)shows that there are some influences of the sewer line to the water regime high content of total dissolved solids may cause gastrointestinal irritation so in some places nitrate level is high than the permissible limit. High nitrate level in residential water is an immediate health concern for infants and pregnant women because nitrate in drinking water has been linked to methamoglobinemia or “blue baby syndrome.” A link to some type of cancers is also suspected. The parameters like pH, TDS, and Nitrates of Bore wells although these values fall beyond the BIS. But highest domestic activities and unhygienic condition are the origin of increase of pH, TDS, Nitrates in this region. The results found that the water in all these places was found to be unfit for human consumption due to the accumulation of domestic sewage and industrial outflow.
