The Maritime School Assessment Program (MSAP) is a nationwide standard academic assessment test for regular second year students taking up Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation (BSMT) or Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering (BSMarE).
The Misamis University, Ozamiz City, Philippines, being an institution which offers BSMT and BSMarE, has been submitting its students to the MSAP. The MSAP was taken by the students for the three consecutive years. The performance of the students were good in some aspects, however, there are areas that need to be addressed to.
The study analyzed the performance of the BSMT students in English, Mathematics, and Technical courses. Intellective and non-intellective variables such as the Purdue Non-Language Test, SRA Verbal Ability for language and quantitative skills were examined and were deemed to predict the performance of the students in the MSAP. A structural equation model was then formulated on the basis of the findings of the study. The research was descriptive in nature. Documentary analysis served as the source of the data which were then analyzed using descriptive statistics like frequency counts, percentage distribution, mean and Pearson product moment correlation. The structural model was derived using the multiple regression analysis. The findings revealed that the students' PNLT was significantly correlated with basic algebra skills, grammar and reading comprehension. The PNLT was also significantly correlated with the students' performance in the deck watchkeeping and seamnaship. The language component of SRA of the students was significantly correlated with their terrestrial navigation and collision regulation competencies. The quantitative components of the SRA of the students was significantly correlated with their performance in the deck watchkeeping and seamanship. Taking the PNLT, language and quantitative abilities, Mathematics and English performance of the students, a structural model of the MSAP performance was formulated (MSAP Performance = 14.50 + 1.27 (PNLT) + 2.63 (Language) - 0.31 (Quantitative) + 0.321 (Mathematics) + 0.699 (English)
