• Identifying types of language testing used in the English language classes by the Zanzibar English language teachers.
• Assessing the effects of the English language testing prepared by the English teachers themselves in the classes to the English language teaching process in Zanzibar.
• Finding out the perceptions of the Zanzibar O-Level English language teachers on the reasons of testing their learners.
• Assessing the place of home-works and class-works in testing English language to the English learners in Zanzibar schools. A survey research method was used in this study. The area of study was the Zanzibar Urban District. Through a purposeful sampling, all the O-level English teachers in the District were the respondents .Method used to collect data from the respondents was a questionnaire only. It was discovered in the study that
• Both oral and written forms of tests are used by the teachers.
• New students are not pre-tested for placement.
• Pre-testing of students on a new topic is not done, and so teachers do not know what the learners know about such topic before instructions.
• Teachers diagnose their learners’ strengths and weaknesses in the learning process through oral and written exercises.
• Teachers use much diagnostic, achievement and summative form of testing, and rarely use placement.
• Written exercises are mostly used to check learners’ progress in the learning process.
• Teachers believe that tests help much in the teaching process from the students to the teachers themselves.
• Teachers believe that there are also negative impacts of tests to the students like anxiety to the students, fears and make them forget other subjects.
• Teachers mainly test their students for getting marks for assessments, checking students’ progress, finding students strengths and weaknesses in the learning process, and for evaluating their teaching practices.
