The craft sector in Montego Bay, Jamaica is still under-developed and is viewed as a cottage industry despite 60 years of existence. The thesis examines the role of the craft industry in tourism, its contribution to the economy of Jamaica and how it can be sustained.
The study was conducted using a variety of methods namely, questionnaires, interviews and discussions with a wide cross section of persons involved in or have an interest in the travel and tourism business. Four markets were looked at: Holiday Inn, Success, Fort Street and Harbour Street.
Several issues that should be addressed which will contribute to developing the industry are highlighted. Also the need for government to establish formal policies to regulate the indusry to facilitate its expansion. The book concludes with several recommendations all aimed at realizing higher returns on investment for all stakeholders within the industry.
The thesis information is an excellent resource for colleges, universities, arts and craft training institutions, persons in academia, government agencies, international funding agencies and private entrepreneurs who have an interest in the industry and its earning potential.
