Thesis Abstract / Summary:

The thesis discusses the two body problem in the context of General Relativity (GR) theory. It contains a general introduction and three chapters followed by three appendices and a list of references. The thesis contains also four tables and thirty one figures and diagrams.

I am not claiming that the attempt given in the present work represents a general solution to the problem. It is just a step towards a more general solution, which is still far beyond the reach of researchers. I have tried to make this thesis a self consistent one, as far as I can. The first two chapters represent historical, observational and theoretical treatments of the problem.
The main problem is tackled in the third chapter. The main results obtained are summarized in the following points:

1. A known exact solution (Curzon Solution), of Einstein’s field equations in free space, is modified and adjusted to be suitable to describe the gravitational field of a real binary system. Curzon solution, in its original form, is classified as a non-physical solution, since it represents the field of two STATIC singularities, which does not represent any physical configuration. After modification and adjustment, the solution becomes TIME-DEPENDENT and can be used to represent the field of two singularities rotating about a common center of mass.

2. Although some conditions are imposed to simplify the suggested modification (comparable binary masses, circular motion, eclipsing binaries), the solution can be applied to systems already existing in nature and satisfying the above mentioned conditions (e.g. PSR J0737-3039).

3. The derivation of a general formula for the red-shift of the pulse waves taking into account the following factors (a) the gravitational effects, (b) the velocity effects and (c) the effect of the direction of the line of sight. All of the above factors and their combined effects are present in this general formula.

4. The TOA resulted from our suggested modifications containing additional terms. These terms are interpreted as corrections due to angular motion of the companion, second and third order in the mass of the companion.

5. Calculations concerning the energy contents of the system considered and study of its possible variation that may give rise to the emission of gravitational waves from such systems.
