The Object of Investigation: forms of subject's development in the novels of J.Galsworthy “The Forsyte Saga”, J.Meredith “The Egoist”, H.Wells “Ann-Veronic”, E.M.Forster “Where The Angels Fear To Tread”, T.Mann “Buddenbrooks”.
The Purpose of the work: the investigation of the subject of spiritual crisis in the English novel of the end XIX- beginning of the XX-th centuries.
Methods of Investigation: the historical and theoretical approach at the basis of which is the idea of subject's development elaborated by Russian Formal school, the structuralistic conception of subject suggested by Ju.M. Lotman, the theory of vertical development of image and of novel's subject development by N.T. Rymar, the conception of genres' novellization by Bachtin, elements of comparative and typological method.
Scientific Innovation: a special type of subject – the subject of spiritual crisis is found in the English novel of the end XIX – beginning of the XX centuries. This type of subject is observed as typologically important phenomenon of artistic culture of the boundary of XIX-XX centuries. The spiritual situation of the epoch, which peculiarity is the crisis of value orientations of a personality, is expressed in its poetics.
Theoretical Importance: it is shown in the work that novellization of satirical genre or of the genre which tends to be satirical causes the appearance of new type of the novel's subject.
Practical Importance: the possibility to apply the notion “the subject of spiritual crisis” towards different phenomena of literature of the boundary of XIX-XX centuries, to use this notion in teaching of The History of English Literature, European Literature, Stylistics, Philosophy of Culture at the university.
