The increased demand for football(soccer) has led to various versions of the game being created; from the 11-a-side outdoor game to street football, beach soccer, six-a-side football and futsal. The focus of this research is to investigate the development of futsal internationally, the different working methods, and promotion of the game implemented by sporting bodies, individuals and countries which have distinguished in that area; and by examining and analysing the current situation in Cyprus to be able to suggest some actions which can be adopted for its promotion in the island.
The mixed methodology applied for the transaction of this research investigates the different approaches implemented by those countries/sporting bodies/individuals deriving data from the development of interviews with the futsal development officer of Sheffield & Hallamshire FA, the president of the futsal federation in Cyprus, papers and studies forwarded to the researcher by important parties involved in the development of the game. Secondary data was derived from federation websites, books, conference papers and journals which helped boosting the quality of the research.
The research reveals that both player technical skills as well as the player’s character can be developed when playing the game and that those can be transferable to the outdoor game(11-a-side). Having realised these benefits, sporting bodies and individuals have embarked on a mission by developing schemes, working methods and generally strategies to develop and promote the game to the maximum.
However, the current situation in Cyprus is characterised by lack of marketing/promotion strategies; funding; development programs including grassroots development and at some stage, facilities. These obstacles can only be resolved by looking abroad where the game is developed, adopt techniques and set up appropriate strategies.
