Thesis Abstract / Summary:

Introduction: The present study was conducted to identify emotional and behavioral reactions among children effected by October 8th earthquake in Pakistan.

Method: In the present study, a sample of 36 children (5-17 years) belonging to worst effected areas (earthquake) was selected from different camps in Rawalpindi and Islamabad. Child Behavioral Checklist (CBCL-P) and H-T-P interpretations were used to assess variety of emotional and behavioral patterns in these children.

Results: Results showed that some of the frequent emotional/behavioral reactions exhibited by children, are symptoms of withdrawal, anxietydepression, agression and attention seeking behavior. Responses on CBCL significantly correlated with H-T-P interpretations whereas gender based comparisons indicated that female children showed more internalizing behavioral patterns (withdrawn, anxietydepression) as compared to male children who exhibited more externalizing emotions (aggression, attention seeking behavior).

Conclusion: It is concluded that significant negative emotional and behavioral reactions are exhibited by the earthquake effected children. The study identify the negative emotional and behavioral reactions to trauma which can be helpful for counseling and therapeutic interventions for these children.
