Thesis Abstract / Summary:

China has significantly made improvements in its economic and social sectors. A country which once had its red doors closed to the world has become an integral part in the world economy. Although advances are being made in the economic sectors, China must now focus on social issues that are vital towards present and future developments. The empirical research conducted in this report focuses on comparing the impact in terms of rural income of the past three Five Year Plans (1991-2005) on the southwestern rural population of Yunnan, Guizhou and Sichuan.

Due to the nature of this research, it was best determined that the quantitative approach would be most effective in this study. The research design for this study employed the repeated cross-sectional data collection method. The researcher was concerned with the existing phenomena of rural reforms but also with changes that result over time. In addition, the cross-sectional data design permits the measurement of differences or change in a variable from one period to another, that is, the description of patterns of change over time.

Fundamentally, the modernization of the agricultural sector and the uniqueness of each local economy in southwestern China provides key opportunities and distinct challenges for the rural population to capitalize on and to combat. Economic reconstruction and the development that the Chinese economy is facing continues to be key factors to ensure stability and the well being of roughly 156 million people in Yunnan, Sichuan and Guizhou. The establishment of alternative income generation activities in poor rural areas coupled with improved infrastructures and economic reforms will prepare provincial government with the tools to alleviate poverty and to promote income growth.
